How does MBS reduce food packaging waste

In the era of pursuing sustainable development, MBS resin is quietly changing the ecological pattern of the food packaging industry with its unique performance advantages. This polymer material is effectively alleviating the global problem of food packaging waste through multiple innovative approaches.

 In modern supermarkets, behind those crystal-clear fruit packaging boxes lies the wisdom of materials science. PVC cling film with MBS resin added not only maintains a light transmittance of over 90% for consumers to clearly view the products, but also extends the shelf life of perishable fruits such as strawberries by 3 to 5 days by reducing the oxygen transmission rate by 42%. A Japanese study has found that this packaging technology can reduce about 15% of the waste of fresh food caused by premature spoilage each year.

When we unscrew a beverage bottle, we may not think of the innovation of the bottle material. The use of MBS reinforced PET plastic has increased the reuse frequency of beverage bottles from 8 times to 20 times. European market practice has shown that this improvement has extended the life cycle of individual beverage bottles by 150%, reducing the waste of 110,000 tons of plastic bottles in 2024 alone.

Abnormal temperatures during cold chain transportation have caused countless fresh foods to be wasted in vain. Nowadays, the temperature-sensitive MBS packaging material developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences can automatically change color to give a warning when the temperature exceeds the safety threshold. This innovative technology has significantly reduced the food loss rate in Shanghai's fresh food logistics system from 6.3% to 2.1%, equivalent to saving 800 tons of food on the verge of spoilage every month.

The revolution of thinning packaging materials has also made significant contributions. The 0.05mm ultra-thin MBS composite film developed by an American enterprise has a strength close to 90% of that of the traditional 0.2mm packaging. This breakthrough not only directly reduces the amount of materials used, but also lowers the transportation energy consumption due to the reduction in weight. Data shows that Walmart alone saves as much as 3,800 tons of packaging materials annually.
